Use
Alpha D3 (alfacalcidol) is a form of vitamin D used mainly as a dietary supplement to treat vitamin D deficiencies. Vitamin D is needed by your body to control levels of calcium and phosphate, and a deficiency can result in unhealthy teeth and bones. Vitamin D deficiencies are usually caused by either insufficient exposure to sunlight, or as a result of kidney problems.
Dosage and Administration
Dose exactly as prescribed by your health care provider. Depending on your progress and other factors your health care provider may decide to change your dosage after your course of medication has begun. Regular blood tests are necessary to check the results of the treatment.
If you miss a dose take it as soon as possible. If, however it is almost time for the next dose, then skip the missed one. Never double-up a dosage.
Side Effects
If you experience any of the follow, contact your health care provider as soon as possible.
- Loss of appetite
- Thirstiness
- Sweating
- Sickness
- Dry mouth
- Metallic Taste
- The need to urinate more regularly than normal
With long-term use of Alpha D3 (Alfacalcidol) there is a risk of developing hypercalcemia and hyperphosphatemia. If you experience any abnormal side effects it is recommended you contact your health care provider.
Precautions
If any of the following apply to you, let your health care provider know before taking Alpha D3 (Alfacalcidol).
- You are taking any other medication, whether prescribed or off-the-shelf
- You are taking any herbal or dietary supplements
- You are allergic to sesame oil, or to any medication
- You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast feeding
- You have kidney stones
- You have hypercalcaemia, or calcification
The following side effects can be experienced when your dosage is too high. If you experience any of the effects listed, contact your health care provider immediately.
- Fatigue, weakness, drowsiness, or dizziness.
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation.
- Headaches
- Muscle or joint pain
- Abdominal pain
