AROPAX/PAXIL(Paroxetine)

Packets of 30 x 20 mg Tablets
Manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline

What is it?
Aropax is the same as Paxil. It works in a similar way to Prozac with the way that it blocks serotonin to correct the imbalance in the brain that is believed to be the cause of depression. The only difference is that its active ingredient (paroxetine) is believed to react slightly differently on the serotonin than Prozac. Paxil is used to treat depression, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.

How do you take it?
Aropax/Paxil should be taken once daily or as directed by your physician. It can be taken without regard to food. Aropax/Paxil may take 2 to 4 weeks to reach effective levels in your body. Alcohol should not be consumed while taking this medicine. The single daily dose of Aropax/Paxil is taken usually in the morning. Swallow the tablet whole, do not chew or crush.

What are the side effects?
Side effects from this medicine are common, and include upset stomach, drowsiness, weakness or tiredness, excitement or anxiety, insomnia, nightmares, dry mouth, and changes in appetite or weight.

What precautions should be taken?
Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to Paroxetine or any other drugs. Tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription drugs you are taking or have taken within the last 2 weeks. Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had glaucoma; an enlarged prostate; difficulty urinating; seizures; an overactive thyroid gland; or liver, kidney, or heart disease. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking Aropax/Paxil, call your doctor immediately. If you are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking Paroxetine. This drug may make you drowsy. Do not drive a car or operate machinery until you know how this drug affects you. Remember that alcohol can add to the drowsiness caused by this drug. Tell your doctor if you use tobacco products. Cigarette smoking may decrease the effectiveness of this drug. Plan to avoid unnecessary or prolonged exposure to sunlight and to wear protective clothing, sunglasses, and sunscreen. This medicine may make your skin sensitive to sunlight.
