Uses
Abilify (aripiprazole) treats mental and mood disorders such as autism, bipolar, depression and schizophrenia by restoring the natural chemical balance in the brain. It is an antipsychotic medication that helps your concentration and lessens hallucinations. Abilify (aripiprazole) helps you to feel more confident and to think more clearly, and become more active in your daily life.
Dosage & Administration
If you are prescribed abilify for schizophrenia, bipolar your dosage will start at 10 mg, one tablet a day. Your physician will monitor your progress and increase the dosage if required. For teenagers, the recommend dose to start is 2 mg.
Side Effects
As with all medications there are risks and side effects. Abilify can increase the mortality rate and incidence of strokes in elderly people being treated for dementia-related disorders; and increase the suicidal thoughts and activity in children, teenagers and young adults.
Common side effects of abilify include nausea, headaches, vomiting, dizziness, sleeping problems, constipation, sleepiness, anxiety, a rash and restlessness.
If you experience high fevers, sweating, muscle stiffness, an irregular of fast heartbeat, confusion or blood pressure changes these can be symptoms of the neuroleptic malignant syndrome. This is a life-threatening condition that affects the nervous system. Call your physician immediately if any of these symptoms occur.
Call your physician immediately if you experience continual muscle movement as this can be a symptom of tardive dyskinesia.
Abilify can increase the risk of diabetes so monitor your blood sugar levels regularly.
Other side effects of abilify include increased body temperature, increased heart rate with the possibility of fainting, low blood sugar, dizziness, difficulty swallowing, increased body temperature and seizures.
Precautions
When prescribing abilify, tell your physician if you are predisposed to seizures; have a history of heart problems, increased blood sugar or diabetes; if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or are breast-feeding; or if you consume alcohol.
Also tell your physician if you are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter medications such as blood pressure medications, quinidine, ketoconazole, fluoxetine or paroxetine, or carbamazepine.
Do not drink alcohol while taking abilify.
Do not operate heavy equipment or drive until you know how the medication affects you as it may impair you motor skills and judgment.
Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration and avoid overheating as it may be difficult to lower your blood temperature while taking abilify.
