Uses
Brimonidine Ophthalmic is used to treat and increase of pressure in the eyes. This condition is called ocular hypertension or open-angel glaucoma, and is an exceedingly dangerous condition that can result in permanent loss of sight if left untreated. Brimonidine Ophthalmic functions to treat this condition by reducing the quantity of liquid in the eye, thus reducing pressure. It also aids in fluid drainage. Of course, the drug has other uses, but these are the main ones.
Dosage and administration
Brimonidine Ophthalmic is potent medication and must generally be used according to the prescription and directions of a health care provider. Be very careful to follow your health care provider's instructions exactly, and especially do not increase the dosage of the drug or continue using it beyond the time that your health care provider has prescribed.
Administration: Put your head backwards and gently stretch the lower lid of the eye down. Now, holding the dropper in position above the eye, look upwards, directing your gaze away from the direction of the dropper, and squeeze a drop out of it and on to your eye. Put your finger on the inner corner of the eye and press down gently. Only put one drop at a time. The drug is generally used trice daily.
Side Effects
Brimonidine Ophthalmic slows the thought process, and reaction speed. You should avoid using this drug just before driving, or before doing any other job that could prove dangerous if you are not alert. Also, be very careful not to mix these with other medications – for example, some other kind of drops – as this can cause unforeseeable reactions.
Brimonidine Ophthalmic can cause allergic reaction, so inform your health care provider at once if you have hives, breathing difficulties or swellings in the face.
Side effects include itching or discomfort in the eye, blurred vision, finding light painful, aches in the head, or even an infection with swelling and liquid coming from the eyes.
Precautions
If you happen to wear contact lenses, you must remember that they must be removed before any application of Brimonidine Ophthalmic. You must also talk to your health care provider and ask him just how long you should wait before reinserting the lenses after an application of the drug. This is important, as Brimonidine Ophthalmic sometimes contains substances, usually preservatives, that can discolor your lenses.
You should also remember to wash your hands thoroughly before using the drug. This helps to prevent eye infections.
