Uses
Aminophylline is a potent drug designed for use in the relief of certain respiratory and related pulmonary disorders. It is designed for intravenous transfer and is not designed for self-dosage. Only a health care provider or trained nurse is qualified and capable of safely administering this drug. That said, Aminophylline contains a complex of compounds (mainly theophylline, as well as ethylenediamine) that act to relieve asthma related bronchospasms. It is also used in the relief of obstructive pulmonary disease, especially when patients experience it chronically.

Dosage and administration
Note firstly that use of this drug on infants can be potentially extremely dangerous, and should not under any normal circumstance be undertaken. That understood, the dose of the drug is calculated by assessing the lean body mass, and then measuring out a dose of the drug that is relative and proportional to it.

This drug is administered via intravenous, and the intravenous must be set to deliver slowly. This is also extremely important. At some point, maintenance can be delivered through the administration of larger volume infusion solutions. In maintenance therapy, it is impotent to rate regulate, thus ensuring an hourly, controlled delivery of the drug.

The attending health care provider must keep the patient under constant observation, especially to guard against the possibility of toxicity. If it is possible, observations should also be made of the levels of active theophylline levels in the serum.

Dosage consists of a loading dose delivered through slow intravenous, the rate not to exceed twenty five milligrams a minute. From that point on, the attending health care provider switches to maintenance for a subsequent twelve hours.

Side Effects
Some of the effects of this drug include theophyline toxicity. Children especially are prone to seizures under treatment by this drug. The drug also undesirably stimulates the nervous system and the cardiovascular. It can also increase stomach acidity and adversely affect patients with stomach ulcers. As with all other drugs, there is an indefinable risk of allergic reactions.

Precautions
In those susceptible to theophyline toxicity, namely the elderly and those with hepatic and cardiac disorders, the levels of theophyline toxicity must be monitored carefully to prevent the resulting adverse effects. Remember that children are most affected by this and there have been records of seizures in children even when theophyline levels were well within standard and accepted safety parameters.

A standard precaution when using this drug is to proceed with caution if a patient has a prior history of seizures.
