Uses
Diclofenac sodium requires a prescription and is used to treat the symptoms of pain, inflammation, swelling, and redness. This drug is often prescribed to relieve the pain of migraines, symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis however, this drug does not cure nor slow down the progression of these diseases. This drug is an NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory) that inhibits production of prostaglandins that causes inflammation and pain. Blocking production of prostaglandins eases pain, inflammation, and joint swelling associated with arthritis. This drug is also prescribed for relief of fibromyalgia that is widespread pain throughout the body, pain symptoms of gout, pain caused by cancer, and systemic lupus erythematosus.


Dosage & Administration
The recommended dose for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis pain relief is 100mg once per day for diclofenac sodium extended-release. It may take several weeks before the drug takes full effect and it’s a good idea to take this drug with some food, water, milk, or an antacid to prevent stomach upset. Diclofenac sodium should be swallowed whole. Do not chew. You should take the lowest possible dose for the shortest period of time to decrease the chance of serious side effects. Take this drug the same time every day to make sure you maintain appropriate levels in the blood. Don’t take other NSAIDs when taking diclofenac sodium. It is all right to take Tylenol with this drug as directed.


Side Effects
According to the FDA, diclofenac sodium may increase the risk of heart attack or stroke as with most NSAIDs. This drug is well tolerated by most people otherwise minor side effects that might occur don’t generally require treatment. Symptoms seen in patients include constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, stomach pain, gas, unexplained bleeding, peptic ulcers, nausea, vomiting, anemia, dizziness, swelling, headache, itching, unexplained rash, and tinnitus which is ringing in the ears. Call you health care provider if any unusual bleeding occurs such as a nosebleed, bloody stools or urine, vomiting with blood, or red spots on your skin.


Precautions
This drug is rated as a category C drug. If you’re pregnant, diclofenac sodium can do harm to your fetus especially in the third trimester. You need to tell your health care provider if you are planning to get pregnant. This drug has not been approved for use in children. Make sure your health care provider knows your medical history and any medications you are taking to avoid drug interactions. If you see swelling, blisters, wheezing, or have difficulty in breathing call your health care provider immediately as this may be a sign of a serious allergic reaction.
