Uses
Diclofenec is a prescription medicine to treat migraines, pain, arthritis, and actinic keratosis that is a precancerous skin growth caused by over exposure to the sun. Diclofenec does not provide a cure or slow down the progression of disease associated with causing pain, inflammation, and swelling. This drug is an NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory) that inhibits production of the hormone prostaglandin that causes inflammation and pain. Blocking of this hormone by diclofenec eases pain, inflammation, and joint swelling associated with arthritis and other diseases. This drug is also prescribed for off-label conditions such as fibromyalgia that is widespread pain throughout the body, pain symptoms of gout, and cancer pain.
Dosage & Administration
The recommended dose for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis pain relief is 75mg twice a day for diclofenec. It may take several weeks before the drug takes full effect and to prevent stomach upset you should take this drug with some food and/or drink. Do not chew diclofenec, as it should be swallowed whole. You should take the lowest possible dose to help eliminate pain to lessen the possibility for serious side effects. In order to maintain proper levels of diclofenec in your blood stream, you should take the medication about the same time every day. You shouldn’t take other NSAIDs due to possible drug interactions but it is okay to take Tylenol as directed.
Side Effects
As with any NSAID, diclofenec can increase the risk of heart attack or stroke. This drug is well tolerated by most people otherwise minor side effects that might occur don’t generally require treatment. Some symptoms observed include constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, stomach pain, gas, unexplained bleeding, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, swelling, headache, itching, unexplained rash, and tinnitus which is ringing in the ears. Call you health care provider if any unusual bleeding such as bloody stools or urine and bloody vomiting occur.
Precautions
If you are pregnant or plan to get pregnant you need to tell your health care provider as diclofenec has a drug rating of category C and can do harm to the fetus. Children have not been approved to take this drug according to the FDA. Tell your health care provider if you are allergic to any medications you have taken in the past and how they affected you such as rashes, hives, itching, shortness of breadth and any swelling of the face, tongue, and lips. This might be an indication of how you will react to diclofenec so that you will be on the alert to catch these symptoms when they first appear.
