Uses
Gliclazide also known as sulphonylurea is an antidiabetic that is used to control high blood sugar in non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus type 2. This drug helps prevent heart disease, stroke, kidney dysfunction, circulatory problems, and blindness commonly found with diabetes. In this type of diabetes, the beta cells of your pancreas still make insulin but not enough or you're not using insulin properly. Gliclazide causes the pancreas to release more insulin into the blood and allows for more binding of glucose. Now more glucose can get into your cells where it is needed. This drug doesn’t cure diabetes mellitus type 2 but rather helps keep it under control.
Dosage & Administration
The strength and number of tablets per day is dependent on the amount of sugar in the blood and urine so the dose is individualized. Adults usually take 80mg each day orally with a meal as a single dose or 160mg to 320mg divided into 2 doses taken with the morning meal and later with the evening meal. If you miss a dose, take ASAP but if you’re close to another dose time skip your missed dose. In other words, don’t double dose.
Side Effects
Gliclazide may cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia, hypo means low, glyc means sugar, emia is a suffix for blood) you may experience symptoms like dizziness, weakness, drowsiness, headache, sweating, nervousness, shaking, and tingling of the extremities. So, drink some orange juice or a non-diet soda to increase blood sugar levels. Don’t skip meals. If you experience high blood sugar known as hyperglycemia you may experience confusion, drowsiness, flushing, rapid breathing, or a fruity breath odor.
Precautions
Tell your health care provider if you have liver or kidney problems or allergies to sulfa drugs. Gliclazide creates sun sensitivity so avoid long sun exposures and wear sunscreen. Drinking alcohol may cause a severe decrease in blood sugar. If you have been a long time smoker and decide to quit at this time, you need to tell your health care provider, as he/she may need to lower your dose of gliclazide.
