Uses
Moclobemide as a drug is used to treat major depression and social anxiety. It is a reversible inhibitor of monoamine oxidase (MAOI) that acts on the neurotransmitters serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine for control of mood swings. This drug has the added benefit of eliminating many of the side effects of other MAOIs like high blood pressure, brain damage, liver damage, and increases in body temperature. What this drug does is to prevent the break down of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine that help to elevate mood, improve ill-being feelings, decrease exhaustion, improve concentration deficits and sleeplessness. The antidepressant effects of this drug can be seen within the first week of treatment. As moclobemide has no sedative action, patients with suicidal thoughts should take a sedative treatment at the same time.

Dosage & Administration
Moclobemide is rapidly absorbed and lasts for about 16 hours. The metabolites of this drug are removed by way of the kidneys so ends up in your urine. No special diet is generally required accept that you should avoid cheddar cheese, fava beans, and red wine to prevent an increase in blood pressure. For treatment of major depression, the initial dose should be 300mg taken in 2 or 3 doses daily and can be increased to 600mg daily continuously for 4 to 6 weeks to see if the drug is working. For social anxiety disorder, initial dose should be 300mg on the first 3 days of treatment and then can be increased to 600mg daily. Treatment prospects are not good with chronic alcoholism.

Side Effects
Moclobemide is generally well tolerated by patients. Symptoms reported include allergic response, vertigo, headache, nausea, dry mouth, and rash. Severe side effects are rare. Overdose is generally reversible when this drug is taken alone.

Precautions
In general, moclobemide should not be taken with other antidepressants due to possible drug interactions. Caution is needed with patients with bipolar disorder, uncontrolled high blood pressure, over active thyroid, and schizophrenia. Make sure you tell your healthcare provider about any medications you are taking including vitamins and other supplements.
