Uses
Ketotifen is an antihistamine used to treat rhinitis and conjunctivitis. Ketotifen works to relieve allergic symptoms such as watery and itchy eyes, sneezing, a blocked or runny nose, and rashes and itching of the skin. It works by blocking the histamine released from the mast cells and blocks the H1 receptors so if histamine is released, ketotifen prevents it from having an effect on you.
Dosage & Administration
Take ketotifen strictly as directed by your physician with food.
Do not change your dose or suddenly stop taking this medication without first consulting your physician.
Do not give this medication to anyone it has not been prescribed for.
Side Effects
Possible side effects of ketotifen include stomach pain, coughing, chills, diarrhea, headaches, fever, allergic reactions, abdominal pain, joint pain, general feeling of being unwell, runny nose, dark urine, burning or painful urination, urge to urinate more than usual, rashes, convulsions, itching, vomiting, trouble sleeping, a sore throat, muscle spasms, fainting, vomiting blood, bad breath, jaundice, and unexplained tiredness or weakness. If you experience any of these symptoms and they do not go away or get worse, consult your physician.
Precautions
Do not take ketotifen if you are allergic to it or any other ingredients in the medication.
Tell your physician if you have a history of kidney, heart or liver disease, blood disorders, diabetes, or epilepsy before you take ketotifen.
Make sure your physician knows if you are pregnant, plan on becoming pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
Tell your physician about any prescription, non-prescription, or herbal remedies you are taking.
Tell your physician if you use illicit drugs, consume high amounts of caffeine or alcohol, or if you smoke, as the way ketotifen works in your system may be affected.
When you first start taking ketotifen it may affect your reactions and make you drowsy. Do not operate heavy equipment or drive a motor vehicle until you know how this medication affects you.
Avoid drinking alcohol as it may make you drowsier.
