Uses
Salbutamol is used to treat and manage asthma attacks that have not responded to other treatments. It is fast working, and acts for a short period of time to reverse the obstruction of your airways.
Dosage & Administration
Salbutamol is inhaled through the mouth using a nebulizer and is to be taken strictly as directed by your health care provider. Its effects last 4 to 6 hours and you can use it either continuously or when required.
Do not change or take more than the recommended dose of Salbutamol. If you do, you will risk severe side effects and possible death.
Do not give this medication to anyone it has not been prescribed for.
Side Effects
As with all medication, Salbutamol has the potential to cause side effects in some people. Common side effects include headaches, tremors, hypokalaemia, and tachycardia. If you experience any of these symptoms and they get worse or persist, consult your health care provider.
Uncommon side effects include palpitations, muscles camps, and throat and mouth irritation and should be reported to your health care provider immediately if they persist or get worse.
If you experience hypersensitivity, supraventricular tachycardia, urticaria, bronchospasms, extrasystoles paradoxical bronchospasms, hypotension, angio-oedema, hyperactivity, and atrial fibrillation, these are rare side effects and you should consult your health care provider immediately, or seek emergency medical attention.
If an allergic reaction occurs, seek emergency medical attention. Signs of an allergic reaction include bronchospasms, rashes, oropharyngeal oedema and angio-oedema, anaphylaxis and urticaria.
Precautions
Only use Salbutamol through a nebulizer as an inhalant. Never swallow or inject Salbutamol.
Tell your health care provider about all other prescription, non-prescription and herbal remedies you are taking as they may interact badly with Salbutamol and cause adverse side effects.
Do not take Salbutamol if you are allergic to it or to any other ingredients in the medication.
Make sure your health care provider knows you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding when they prescribe Salbutamol for you.
Tell your health care provider if you are a diabetic, have a history of thyrotoxicosis, glaucoma, or if you have taken large amount of sympathomimetic agents recently.
