What is Caverject?
Caverject, or alprostadil, is a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction in men. Caverject is an injectable drug that causes increased blood flow to the penis, producing an erection within 5 to 20 minutes. Because Caverject is available in pre-filled syringes, patients do not have to worry about mixing a solution and drawing it up in an empty syringe. This drug is directly injected into the spongy tissue of the side of the penis.
How is Caverject used?
Injectable Caverject produces an erection in 80% of patients within half an hour. The erection will last for about an hour.
Because the effect of the drug in the semen is unknown with regard to unborn fetuses, it is very important that men using Caverject use a condom when having sexual relations with a woman who is, or who might be pregnant. Caverject does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases.
Adverse effects
Adverse effects are usually very mild and include pain at the injection site, slight bleeding from the urethra, and penile pain. Men who experience a painful, curved erection should seek medical attention, as should any man who has an erection lasting longer than four hours. Delaying medical treatment could result in permanent tissue damage.
Warnings
Men who should not take Caverject are those with blood clotting disorders like leukemia and sickle cell anemia. Men who have a penile implant should tell their doctor before using Caverject. |
