Exelon is an Acetylocholinesterase inhibitor which is used in the treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease. This medicatoin prevents an enzyme known as acetylcholinesterase from breaking down acetylcholine in the brain (a chemical associated with memory process). Increased concentrations of acetylcholine lead to increased communication between nerve cells which may in turn temporarily improve or stabilise the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. How do you take it? Exelon should be taken with food. Swallow the capsules whole with a drink, without opening or crushing them. You must take Exelon twice a day, once with your breakfast and once with your evening meal. Take as prescribed by your doctor. The highest dose that should be taken is 6 mg twice a day. To benefit from your medicine you must take it every day. What are the side effects? The following are the most common side effects of Exelon, as experienced by patients in clinical studies: Nausea, Vomiting, Anorexia, Dyspepsia, Asthenia, Weight loss. What precautions should be taken? Exelon use is associated with significant stomach-related side effects, including nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and weight loss. If therapy is interrupted for longer than several days, treatment should be reinitiated with the lowest daily dose in order to avoid the possibility of severe vomiting and its potentially serious consequences.
