Flonida Cream (Efudex, Generic Fluorouracil) 5% 10gm
Use
Flonida
is indicated in the topical treatment of pre-cancerous and cancerous skin growths (multiple actinic or solar kerotoses, and genital warts that did not respond to podophyllum resin or podophyllotoxin treatments).
Other Conditions Treated
Studies have indicated that the drug's active ingredient, fluorouracil, smooths wrinkles.
Dosage and Administration
Flondia Cream
is a prescription medication; it should be applied as directed by your medical professional.
Apply a thin layer of cream, ensuring it covers the entire area, using clean fingertips of a cotton-tipped applicator (applicator may be included with the cream). Before applying with the fingertips, wash your hands thoroughly; after application, wash your hands thoroughly.
Avoid getting the cream into the eyes, nose or mouth, or any mucous membrane areas.
During treatment, avoid direct sunlight from 10am to 3pm, as exposure to ultraviolet light increases the inflammatory reaction. If you must go out during this period, wear protective clothing and sunglasses, and use a sunscreen of 15 SPF or above. Do not use a sun bed or sun lamp.
After 1 to 2 weeks, the medication may cause the following on the affect area (expect the effect9s) to endure for several weeks after stopping the treatment):
Redness
Soreness
Scaling
Peeling
Sometimes, a smooth pink area remains as the treated skin heals; this usually fades after 1 to 2 months.
Do not stop treatment without first talking to your health care provider.
Side Effects
Reported side effects to Fluorouracil include:
Burning
Crusting
Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) - inflammation of the skin which is delayed; it is a result of cutaneous contact with a specific substance which the patient has developed a specific sensitivity to.
Pruritus - an itchy sensation that provokes the desire to scratch.
Rash
Soreness
Ulceration
The above side effects are localised and frequently an extension of the medication's pharmacological activity.
Warnings and Precautions
If you experience any severe reaction to sunlight, consult your health care provider.
Do not get the cream onto mucous membranes, as this may result in local inflammation and ulceration. Miscarriage and birth defect may also result if applied to mucous membrane areas during pregnancy.
Flonida Cream
is contraindicated in patients known to be hypersensitive to fluorouracil, and in women who are expecting or may become pregnant.
It is unknown if fluorouracil is passed into breast milk, thus mothers should not breastfeed while on
Flonida
therapy.
Paediatric patients should discuss the safety and effectiveness of Flonida and fluorouracil with their health care provider, as neither has been established for this group of patients.
