Brand Name: Lumigan
Generic Name: Bimatoprost
Form: Eye Drops
Manufacturer: Allergan

What is Lumigan?
Lumigan (Bimatroprost) Ophthalmic Solution is indicated in the treatment of ocular hypertension (open-angle glaucoma) and high eye pressure (intraocular pressure, IOP).

Lumigan is also indicated in the treatment of hypotrichosis, a lack of eyelash growth. It is also used cosmetically as Latisse. The solution is applied to a sterile brush, which is then drawn over only the skin of the upper eyelid at the base of the lashes. Other conditions may be treated that are not listed, e.g., hair loss.

How is Lumigan used?
Use Lumigan exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

Wash your hands prior to using Lumigan. Ensure that the eye dropper does not touch any surface, including your hands and eyes, as a contaminated dropper could cause an eye infection which may lead to eye damage.

Tilt your head slightly back and pull down the lower lid to create a small pocket. Hold the dropped above the eye and look up and away from it. Squeeze a drop into your eye and close your eye. Press gently on the inside corner of your eye for around a minute to prevent the liquid from draining into the tear duct.

If you require more than one drop in one eye, wait about five minutes before administering the second drop.

If you use any other eye drops, wait five minutes before using your other eye drop medication.

Should you develop an eye infection, sustain an eye injury, or plan to have eye surgery, inform your doctor immediately.

If the eye drop changes colours or has particles in it, do not use the medication.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your scheduled time; do not double up for the missed dose. Any over dosage requires immediate medical attention.

Adverse effects
If you experience any allergic reaction, like hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of face, lips, tongue or throat, stop using Lumigan and seek emergency medical help.

Stop using the eye drops and contact your doctor right away if the following occurs:

  • Eye redness, itchiness, pain or swelling in or around the eye
  • Oozing or discharge from the eye
  • Increased sensitivity to light
  • Vision changes (e.g., decreases acuity; blurred vision)
Less serious side effects may include:
  • Mild eye discomfort
  • Dizziness
  • Feeling like something is in the eye
  • Dry or water eyes
  • Stinging or burning of the eyes after using the drops
  • Discolouring of the eye
  • Eyelash growth

If you experience any unusual or troubling side effect, contact your doctor.

For a more detailed list of side effects, see the patient information leaflet or contact your medical professional or chemist.

Warnings
If you are allergic to bimatoprost or any of the ingredients used, you should not use Lumigan.

Prior to using this medication, inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breast-feeding. It is not known if Lumigan is harmful to an unborn baby, whether bimatoprost passes in breast milk or if it could harm a nursing infant.

Do not use Lumigan while you are wearing contact lenses. After administering the eye drops, wait 15 minutes before replacing the contact lenses.

The medication may cause a gradual change in eye colour, usually an increase in brown pigment, which may not be noticeable for months or years. The change in eye colour may be permanent even after treatment ends in the eye being treated. Eyelashes for the eye under treatment may also grow or become thicker.
