Use
Mesacol is an anti-inflammatory aminosalicylate drug used in the treatment of ulcerative colitis, as well as other swelling and inflammations of the rectum and colon. It can also be prescribed for other conditions, including treatment of Crohn’s disease. It works by reducing or stopping the production of natural chemicals which cause inflammation, swelling, tissue damage, and diarrhea.
Dosage and Administration
Always take as prescribed by your health care provider. Never change your dosage, start, or stop taking Mesacol unless recommended by your health care provider, and always finish the course of medication as you are directed.
Mesacol is to be swallowed whole with a full glass of water, with or without food, normally once per day at the same time. Never chew or crush the tablet as this will render the medication ineffective.
It can take up to 3 weeks of use before you see any improvement. If, after this period you cannot see any change or your condition is worsening, inform your health care provider as soon as possible.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. If however it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue as normal. Never double up a dose to compensate for a previous missed dose.
Side Effect
The following side effects are usually mild, requiring no medical attention. If any persist, worsen, or become bothersome inform your health care provider.
- Headaches
- Fatigue
- Nausea or vomiting
- Bloating and abnormal gas
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Indigestion
- Acne
- Hair loss
Inform your health care provider immediately if you experience any of the following more serious side effects.
- Severe headaches
- Fever
- Stomach cramps
- Chest pains
- Bloody diarrhea
- Yellowing of the eyes or skin
- Abnormal urine
- Severe fatigue
Seek immediate medical attention if you suspect you have had an allergic. Symptoms of a reaction include rashing, itching, hives, swelling, dizziness, and difficulty breathing.
Precautions
Prior to taking Mesacol, discuss fully your medical history and any prescription or non-prescription medication you take with your health care provider. Always inform your health care provider if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, are breast feeding, or if you have had any of the following.
- Any allergies
- Asthma
- Any stomach condition
- Any heart condition
- Any kidney condition
- Any liver condition
- Any pancreas condition
Whilst using Mesacol:
- Avoid alcohol consumption completely
- Never share your medication, even with someone who has the same condition as you
- If you think you have overdosed, seek immediate medical attention
