PREMARIN(Conjugated Estrogens)

Packets of 28 x 0.3 mg Tablets
Manufactured by Wyeth Ayerst

What is it?
Premarin is indicated for the prevention of osteoporosis, and for the treatment of moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms and vaginal dryness associated with menopause. Premarin is used to treat night sweats, hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms.

How do you take it?
Standard dosage: 0.625 mg - this is the amount most studied and usually has been shown to be the lowest amount required to protect against osteoporosis and heart disease, although recent studies also indicated that 0.3 milligram will also eliminate symptoms and prevent osteoporosis. The lower dosages’ effect on heart disease isn’t known yet. Your doctor will prescribe the right amount for you.

What are the side effects?
Estrogen can increase the risk of cancer of the uterus. Your doctor may prescribe a progestin along with Premarin to reduce this risk. Women who have had a hysterectomy do not have this risk. Side effects of Premarin include blood clots, nausea, abdominal pain, breast tenderness, irregular bleeding, headache, and hair loss.

What precautions should be taken?
You should not take Premarin if you have had any breast or uterine cancer, abnormal vaginal bleeding, abnormal blood clotting, or if you think or know you are pregnant. Pregnant women should not take Premarin because of possible risk to the fetus. If you have heart disease, you and your doctor may decide you should not take Premarin. Tell your doctor about your personal and family medical history.
