ZYPREXA – (Olanzapine)
Packets of 30 x 10 mg Tablets
Manufactured by Lilly
What is it?
Zyprexa is approved for long-term therapy in schizophrenia. It is different from the older generation of antipsychotic medications in the way that it helps control both the positive (hallucinations, delusions) and the negative (apathy, social withdrawal) symptoms. This medication acts to balance two nerve impulses and, by doing so, helps restore more normal thinking and mood. In general, this medication has fewer side effects than standard antipsychotic medications. Zyprexa also seems to help improve the negative symptoms of schizophrenia better than the other classes of antipsychotic medications.
How do you take it?
Zyprexa can be administered on a once a day schedule without regard to meals, generally beginning with 5 to 10 mg initially, with a large dose of 10 mg a day within several days.
What are the side effects?
Most common side effects are drowsiness, agitation, insomnia, dizziness. Infrequent side effects are skin rash, headache, depression, fast heart rate, constipation, weight gain. Rare side effects/Risks abnormal movements, neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), orthostatic hypotension (low heart rate upon standing).
What precautions should be taken?
If you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, discuss the potential risks of this or any medication with your doctor. Be aware that older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of olanzapine than younger adults.
